Types of concrete footings

Under every house is a foundation, and under most foundations are concrete footings. Depending on the soil type, the types of footing will vary. Here are some of the most common that you’ll see:
- Spread Footing: Spread footings are the most common and they are shaped like an upside down “T” shape. It supports the column and walls, and transmits and distribute the load of the structure to the soil beneath it.
- Stepped Footing: Stair-like design that spreads out load on sloped soils. This type of footing is commonly used on loose soils such as clay and where conditions doesn’t permit a flat soil surface.
- Trench Footing: Shallow trench filled with concrete. It acts as a shallow foundation that separates brick walls from below ground.
Common problems encountered on the job site
Naturally, it’s the unusual situations that cause the most problems, specially the one that appears unexpectedly. These includes misaligned or off-center footing and unconsolidated concrete that causes the most problems such as footing settlement. Because concrete footings are below ground, any problems should be sorted out even before backfilling works.
