Insulation is not only an important feature of your home, but a requirement regulated by the Ontario Building Code. Without proper insulation, your home will be wasting money and consuming far more energy to heat or cool itself during the seasons. We can help. ECC Construction Group Inc. is one of the leading spray foam insulation contractors in Toronto and the GTA.

ECC Construction Group Inc. takes pride in helping homeowners get their homes insulated quickly through spray foam insulation. We offer high-end insulation services in Toronto and the GTA and are considered to be one of the top residential insulation contractors in the area. We have been offering excellent home and commercial insulation services for years now. We offer two types of spray foam insulation, namely: 2-lb closed cell and open cell polyurethane foam spray. These two types of spray foam insulation are popular among homeowners due to their ease of installation, relatively cheap cost, and effectiveness. However, they each have their own specific use and application.

What is polyurethane foam spray?

Polyurethane foam spray is one of the best insulating materials for homes, it features excellent insulating properties thanks to its porous nature. It also has high resistance to water seepage, high mechanical strength, and low density, making it the ideal material for home insulation. A strong polyurethane foam is obtained by mixing two chemicals, a diisocyanate and a polyol, in the presence of suitable catalyzers. This mixing takes place inside a small cavity in the spray gun. The resulting reaction produces heat that transforms the two chemicals to approximately 30 times its liquid volume. The polyurethane foam spray is available in open cell foam or closed cell foam formulas.

2-lb open cell foam

  • As the name suggests, an open cell foam is made of irregularly shaped cells linked together as a result from the polyurethane foam expansion. Because the cells aren’t fully encapsulated, this makes the foam softer and more flexible. Open cell spray foam is typically used to insulate attic ductwork due to its unique properties. This flexibility allows for a pleasant home environment by keeping the air flow inside. In addition, its ability to resist molds and mildew makes it the ideal insulation for home interiors. An open cell foam also features sound dampening properties. The use of open cell foam will still require the use of vapor barrier just as you would for batt insulation.

2-lb closed cell foam

  • Closed cell foam is made of uniform cells that maintain their own shape. Due to their closed properties, air and moisture are unable to get inside the foam. Making it more rigid and stable than an open cell foam. One inch of 2lb closed cell spray foam yields an R-value of 6.5-7, therefore you would need about 3.5” of foam to achieve an R-value of 22 to be sufficient and compliant for exterior walls above grade. Surface areas such as garage ceilings, or exposed areas require a minimum R-value of 31 which translates to about 5” of spray foam. This type of foam is also very dense, in the range of 30 to 60 kg/m3. It also features low vapor permeability and high compressive strength, which makes it perfectly suited for exposed areas such as attics, exterior walls, or basement foundations. The use of closed cell foam will not require the use of vapor barrier because it does not release any moisture.
