Type X Drywall – Gypsum boards have a certain degree of fire resistance because of the presence of gypsum which consists around 21% water. When a fire occurs, this water evaporates thus allows a slower transfer of heat prolonging the time for the board to ignite. Type X drywall has special core additives like glass fibers that extends this allowed time before the heat transfer. You’ll notice a UL/ULC marking labeled on the back of each board. This identifies it as a fire-resistant rated board.
